Most motion detectors use radio energy to monitor the room. If any of the radio energy is interrupted, such as when someone enters a room, an alarm will go off. Some homeowners are only concerned with monitoring a specific threat. For them, a simple, inexpensive alarm system will give them peace of mind without busting their budget. These alarm systems, called single premises alarms, can notify homeowners of a problem, such as excess carbon monoxide or smoke.

Most homeowners require a more sophisticated alarm. Local alarm systems alert occupants and neighbors of an intruder by sounding a siren. No other action is taken beyond the siren noise, so this system can be useless if there are no neighbors around. The next set of systems are monitored systems. Some are very simple, with the control panel prompting a call to the local police if the alarm is tripped. The most sophisticated systems are continually monitored. These systems send information to your security monitoring company. If there is a problem, the company will send a representative to help or phone the police.
